5 things To Know When Planning A Trip To Fall Creek Falls

Updated: Sep 11

Swan Valley is known for its pristine fly fishing, beautiful evergreen trees, mountain biking, and lakes. There is truly so much to do and explore in Swan Valley but one of our favorite spots here in town is the Fall Creek Falls waterfall. Exploring this area is so fun and it's a great way to spend an afternoon with your friends or family.

To make sure your trip to Fall Creek Falls goes flawlessly we've created a list of 5 tips to help you have a great time.

1. Directions

Fall Creek Falls is located across the Snake River on the South West side of Swan Valley. Thanks to technology, you can actually type "Fall Creek Falls" right into Apple Maps and pull right up to the waterfall. The waterfall is located right off Forest Service road 058 in Swan Valley, Idaho. There is no parking lot so know that you will be parking on the side of the dirt road. The weekends can get pretty so plan to park down the road.

2. Accessibility

One of the coolest things about this waterfall is that it quite literally, off the side of the road. There is no official trail here at the waterfall but there are some super short dirt trails that will take you to different parts of the top of the waterfall. Make sure to keep your eyes on your little ones, there are some high edges. :)

3. Getting to the Bottom

While there are a couple of different ways to get to the bottom, the easiest way during summer is to bring a canoe, paddle board or kayak. Due to fluctuating water levels the waterfall becomes inaccessible to walk to. When we went exploring, the water level was pretty low so we carefully scaled down the side of the road to get to the bottom of the waterfall. It was absolutely beautiful.

Once you are at the bottom of the falls you can enjoy a swim, lunch, or a nap in the beautiful weather Swan Valley offers.

We have seen some people scale the front of the waterfall but we wouldn't recommend it since it can be quite dangerous. :)

4. Bring a swimsuit

Summers in Swan Valley can get HOT and Fall Creek Falls is a great place to cool off. Most of the time you'll see others in the waterfall and river so make sure to be kind and courteous to those enjoy the area. Feel free to continue driving down the dirt road to other river pull off spots to jump right in.

5. Spending Time

Fall Creek Falls is an amazing place to explore but one of the most commonly asked questions is, "How do I fill an afternoon looking at a Waterfall?" Such a good question. As we mentioned above, you have to use the water to access the falls from the bottom leaving the top to be explored...which can be really quick. One of our favorite things to do is head up Fall Creek Rd, the first right off Snake River Rd and enjoy a picnic together. As you head up Fall Creek Rd, the road turns into BLM land and you are able to camp and explore the area. With a beautiful creek, beaver, deer, and elk are often found within this canyon.

Feeling like a fun photoshoot? This area is a great place to also take photos to update your photo wall.

We hope you have a great time as you explore the waterfall and beautiful Swan Valley! Don't forget to follow us on Instagram and YouTube for exclusive content, updates, and bonus information. Can't wait to see you!
